The Elopement of Chris and Cheryl

Posted on December 17, 2009 by Chris Cane

The year was 1969. I had just spent the better part of a year on Baffin Island near a village called Cape Dyer. I had quit my job with the phone company in Montreal the previous fall and started work on the DEW line. Now it was mid August and I was home on leave.

The Gas Tank

Posted on December 15, 2009 by Chris Cane

I was nineteen, the year was 1966, and three friends, Roger Pelletier, Dennis Albisser, Steve Hand and I rented a cottage for the summer. The cottage was on Fitch Bay in the Eastern Townships near Montreal. The cottage came with a small cedar strip powerboat for cruising and water skiing. Each Friday after work or

Please let’s not whine! We’re making wine in Columbus Ohio!

Posted on December 13, 2009 by Chris Cane

Cheryl and I celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary last September. The actual event was on September 2nd but for those that know us, know that we were organizing ZFest 2009 here in Cincinnati that weekend. Jody, our younger daughter set up a great event in Columbus on the weekend following ZFest when our lives had

My First Car

Posted on December 13, 2009 by Chris Cane

I was eighteen. The year was 1966. It was spring and I was out mowing neighbor’s lawns trying to earn some pocket money. About half a block down from where I lived was a home occupied by a widow whose lawn I had been cutting for years. On this particular day I was merrily cutting

Borrowing Dads Car

Posted on November 12, 2009 by Chris Cane

I’m sure that many of you reading this will remember borrowing your Dad’s car. I know one person, Roger Pelletier, who should remember it better than most. The year is 1964 or 1965. Roger and I had our driver’s licenses but we did not have our own cars. Usually we were able to borrow one

Glory Glory Glory – There was Glory all around!

Posted on November 11, 2009 by Chris Cane

A moment not to be forgotten; in the sixties there was a carpet cleaning product called “GloryTM”. It came in a spray can. To use it, one would turn the can over so that the top is towards the bottom and much like canned whipped cream, press the nozzle sideways and a ball of white

If you don’t loik sugar!

Posted on October 11, 2009 by Chris Cane

Well I guess I should add one of my Dad’s stories as well. Before my family left England when I was the ripe old age of ten, my Father traveled on business from time to time, I recall him returning from a trip when I was perhaps seven or eight. He spoke of the Bed

Us is them, we what knows!

Posted on October 11, 2009 by Chris Cane

This is really one of my mother’s stories about her younger days. She told this story often as I was growing up, so I add it here to help you understand my roots. Growing up in England, Mum tells the tale of her father buying the family’s first radio. I would guess that the year

And so it begins …

Posted on October 10, 2009 by Chris Cane

It all started for me on May 3rd, 1947 and it has not ended yet! Life began for Chris Cane near Bristol England in the village of Patchway. I’m told that I was born in Filton but I don’t remeber that! The war was over, my folks Peter Raymond Cane and Joan Mary Cane (nee

The Rabbit, The Pub and the Toastie

Posted on February 7, 2009 by Chris Cane

Sorry in advance. At the end of this tale, you will find an explanation as to why I made you read this! Somehow you just can’t stop reading it! Sadder and sadder…. A rabbit walks into a pub and says to the barman “Can I have a pint of beer and a Ham and Cheese
